This spectacular Iron Age gold‑alloy neck ring was discovered in 2005 on farmland just outside Newark‑on‑Trent. It was intentionally buried in a pit, indicating that it was not accidentally lost, however the reason for hiding it remains unclear.
The core of the torc is made of electrum, a combination of gold, silver and copper. The body is crafted from thin strands of rolled gold alloy wire, intricately woven into eight ropes and then twisted together. The ends are ring-shaped and decorated with floral designs. It's believed the torc was likely created in Norfolk, as it's similar to another torc discovered in Sedgeford, North Norfolk.
With our support, the Newark Torc was acquired by Newark & Sherwood District Council’s Museum Service for display at National Civil War Centre, only a few miles from where it was found.
